I recently had a minor discussion with a friend of mine about the Gatecrash leaks that I posted about earlier this week. Something that was always in the back of my mind, but has became more of a possibility to me is the thought that these leaks are actually a marketing ploy by Wizards themselves.
Just like with the iPhone prototypes that were supposedly left on a bar stool, this situation reeks of Wizards using the supposed card leaks to generate buzz and provide free marketing about Gatecrash. This isn’t a bad thing per-say, as I kind of like the speculation and discussion that things like this bring about. This does however lead me to believe that more likely than not, because of what I just said, along with the fact that I haven’t seen Wizards say that these are fake cards, that these are indeed real Gatecrash cards.
I believe that the reason Wizards used foil representations of these cards for the leak is because they are much harder to fake. It’s possible, but not as easy, to make a fake foil MTG card than it is a non-foil. Coupled with the fact that these cards were leaked on the internet in the form of pictures, I again say, that these are likely real cards.
So, take that how you will, and let’s prepare ourselves for spoiler season… I’m excited!!!

These leaks were actually not planned. A gentleman working at one of the printing companies stole these cards, and has been arrested for the thefts. They probably wouldn’t even have caught him if he didn’t try to sell them pre-release like this.
If that’s true then wow what a moron. Do you have a link to the article about that?
I do not have any link to the article about that. I have a fear at the company of losing the contract with Wizards over the leak. The people at WotC are great, and losing their business would be regrettable.
this is dumb. there have almost always been MTG spoilers for the longest time. They do this for publicity and nothing more. It increases the hype for drafts and such thats all it does no harm no foul
